Breastfeeding your baby has a lot of benefits but some new moms struggle with it. When you have just given birth and your body has already been through a lot of stress, breastfeeding can be quite uncomfortable. In those first few weeks and months, when your baby is feeding a lot, it can be difficult to keep up with breastfeeding. But with these simple tips, you can make yourself and your baby more comfortable.

Try Different Positions

Not every breastfeeding position is comfortable and not every baby will like the same positioning. The first thing you want to do is try to figure out which positions your baby likes and which ones you prefer. You can experiment with different positions so that each of you is comfortable at all times. Don’t feel disheartened if you can’t find a good fit right away, just keep experimenting and you will get it. It takes a while to find a good balance, especially when your body is recovering from birth, but as you heal, you will find the right position.

Get A Nursing Pillow

Nursing pillows are perfect if you find breastfeeding uncomfortable. Because they support the baby’s weight, you will have less strain on your arms and back. You can get great nursing pillows from companies like Foryourlittleone that help prop up your baby while breastfeeding. It makes a world of a difference when you are more comfortable and you can focus on finding the right position.

Use A Breast Pump

The first few weeks of breastfeeding is a time when your body will be learning how to produce the right amount of breastmilk for your baby. In those first couple of months, you may feel like you are going through a lot more nursing pads and feeling uncomfortable at times because your body will make too much or not enough milk. Using a breast pump is a good way to get into a regular routine. It also means that you can bottle feed your baby, which is a good option if you are struggling with breastfeeding and experiencing a lot of pain.

Feed From Both Sides Equally

In the early days of breastfeeding, many new moms will find that one side is more comfortable than the other. It might be tempting to keep feeding with the same side but it’s important to switch between sides regularly. This will help maintain a regular amount of breastmilk in your body and it will mean that one side isn’t more swollen or painful than the other after you have been nursing.

Get Some Advice

If you are struggling with breastfeeding and it’s making you uncomfortable, go and get some advice from a professional. By going to see a lactation consultant or other breastfeeding specialist, you can figure out what is best for your baby and yourself and you will feel more at ease when feeding. If you are experiencing specific issues like mastitis, they can help you manage it.

For many mothers, breastfeeding is slightly uncomfortable in the beginning but with these simple tips for breastfeeding, it shouldn’t take long before things become easier. If things remain difficult there is always help out there, so don’t feel afraid to get some advice from your doctor.
