Nothing quite beats a bustling family home filled with joy, love, and laughter. In many cases, nothing’s quite as stressful, either. After all, there’s a lot to juggle when there are kids in the house, and if your property isn’t suited to that need, it’s inevitable that your lives will become that bit harder.

In key functional rooms like your kitchen, in particular, things are going to run a whole lot more smoothly if your layout and design are tailored to what your family needs. In an ideal world, you’ll be able to make this the case with what your kitchen already has to offer but, many times, homeowners find that kitchen remodeling is the best way to cook up a family-friendly space. Especially if you keep the following crucial elements in mind during the design process.

Make seating the main affair

The kitchen should be the hub of the family home, but that won’t be possible if you don’t prioritize seating as the main affair in this space. As such, any remodel should make a big deal of your seating options, preferably without compromising on the kitchen space you have to play with. Luckily, there are countless ways to make this work, from integrated kitchen islands that can double up as tables to well-placed breakfast bars that seamlessly provide much-needed seating in even a small kitchen. Get these right, and you should even find that family members start gravitating here for everything from a quick snack to a complete homework session, thus bringing your kitchen to life at last.

Keep it all easy to clean

It’s natural for things to get a little mucky when you’re undertaking intense family meal prep. The trouble is that, when you’ve spent all afternoon slaving in the kitchen, the last thing you want is to spend a few more hours scrubbing a wooden kitchen surface that absorbs all manner of stains. To avoid this, it’s therefore crucial to consider easy-to-clean options across the entirety of your kitchen. Most obviously, wipeable sides made of materials like marble and granite are going to significantly simplify your cleaning routine, while simple options like an electric hob instead of gas can also be a huge help for fast-fire, in-the-moment cleaning at last.

Consider child safety

Given that our kitchens are home to things like sharp knives and cleaning products, a family-friendly kitchen design should also factor in child safety at every turn. Most notably, households with young children could benefit from designs that keep cupboards up high for this reason. Meanwhile, things like soft-close drawers can ensure that even older kids don’t trap their fingers. These may seem like minor considerations, but by significantly reducing the risks of kitchen accidents, they could well end up being the best things that you do for your family-friendly kitchen overall.

With kids in the house, your family should come at the forefront of every design choice you make, and never is that more the case than when you’re tackling a kitchen that everyone can enjoy.
